Jujutsu Kaisen: A Shonen with an Ambiguous Story
Based on the Jujutsu Kaisen manga written by Gege Akutami, Jujutsu Kaisen (JJK) anime follows the story of a high school student Yuji Itadori as he joins a secret organization of Jujutsu Sorcerers in order to kill a powerful Curse named Ryomen Sukuna, of whom Yuji becomes the host. Produced by the studio MAPPA (producer of Attack on Titan Season 4), JJK was awarded as ‘Anime of the Year’ at the 2021 5th Crunchyroll Anime Awards with the general reception being praiseful.
No spoilers. The first season was very well made in terms of animation and writing. It didn't seem forced (many fans presumed AoT S4 was done in a rush with complaints of bad CGI and character design) and worked out pretty well till the end. There are no disappointments. The anime’s modern and goofy style with a mixture of classic anime antagonism storyline makes it so good to watch. Not knowing where the story leads to and what happens to the characters, that mystery in Anime is not the best-kept secret but JJK delivers a fine time for manga fans to enjoy it.
The overall aesthetic of the show is also so good that you get lost in it, a lot of times it's genuinely funny and the writing makes sense. From the intro song till the end, all the episodes feel great to watch and see character development clearly each episode. Fans often complain about the difference between manga to anime and how anime will never reach the levels of manga but JJK’s anime style and voice acting is top-notch and feels truly authentic. It also delivers a balance of fun and an action-based plot.
The anime also remains faithful to the adaptation and doesn't conclude arcs unnecessarily. All the characters are adored by the fans and the writing of the show is what makes that. The villains, the heroes, the representation all makes it worthwhile to watch and overall making it a good experience.
A prequel to the anime is in works, ‘Jujutsu Kaisen 0’ based on the manga of the same name which was published before the Jujutsu Kaisen manga.
